Beat cancel is an experimental/noise duo that specializes
in intense sound shaping. Formed in 1996, Jesse Bayer and
Jerry MacDonald have been creating sonic pieces that use
elements of electronic music and "studio improv" as well as
found sounds and sample manipulation. The songs are not
defined in the traditional sense of the word, they are
almost "soundscapes," but that word implies new-agey
sleepy-time music. Some of the songs presented have a
rhythmic feel, but aren't dancable; some of the songs have a
wash of spaciness that isn't quite ambient in the
"background-drone" style. In short, a listen to Beat Cancel
is to be affected emtionally, that is, these sounds will
cause you to think. How it makes you think, and what kinds
of emotions and feelings is up to the listener. Where as Beat Cancel's debut "Repeal
Time" is a dark, driving piece of work with few
identifyable sounds from start to finish, the new disc
"Stray Current Test" is a much more sample-oriented work. On
"Stray Current Test", many of
the tracks focus on the almost-hypnotic effect of the
interplay of rhythms as other sounds weave in and out.
